SS GreenLight Racing Overview

SS-Green Light Racing is an American professional stock car racing team that competes in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. The team fields Chevrolet Camaro SS entries and operates from a base in Mooresville, North Carolina. Owned by former driver Bobby Dotter, the organization maintains a long-standing technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, which supports its engineering and chassis development.

Founded in 2000, the team has competed across multiple NASCAR national series, including the Camping World Truck Series and the Xfinity Series. Despite a long competitive history, the team’s first victory came in 2022 at Auto Club Speedway, a milestone achieved through a collaborative effort with Stewart–Haas Racing. The team fields several car numbers, with the No. 0 driven primarily by Garrett Smithley and the No. 07 driven by Josh Bilicki serving as its flagship entries in 2026.

Founding and Organizational Origins

SS-Green Light Racing traces its roots to the year 2000, when Bobby Dotter began competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The team was first known as Green Light Racing, with Dotter driving the No. 45 People Against Drugs Chevrolet in two races, posting a best finish of seventeenth at The Milwaukee Mile. The early operation was built around modest resources and a clear focus on driver development within the Truck Series.

Throughout its early years, the team relied on a rotating cast of drivers and small-scale sponsorship deals. The organization gradually expanded its presence in the Truck Series, adding trucks numbered 06, 07, and 08 under the Green Light banner. This period laid the foundation for what would eventually grow into a multi-series racing operation.

In 2008, the team underwent a significant change when Green Light Racing merged with SS Racing during an economic downturn that forced several organizations to combine resources. SS Racing had previously competed in the ASA series and had partnered with Green Light’s Truck program on multiple occasions. The merger produced financial stability and allowed the combined operation to expand its competitive footprint.

Growth Into O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Competition

Following the merger, the rebranded SS-Green Light Racing gradually shifted its competitive focus toward NASCAR’s second-tier national series. The team’s Nationwide Series program debuted in 2014 at Darlington Raceway with veteran Todd Bodine driving the No. 55 car. This step was supported by a partnership with Viva Motorsports, which helped the team enter races when the No. 55 was not in use by its primary partner.

The organization expanded its Xfinity footprint through additional partnerships, including a collaboration with King Autosport on the No. 90 entry and joint efforts with B. J. McLeod Motorsports on the No. 99. The No. 07 car became a full-time entry in 2016 with Ray Black Jr. behind the wheel, supported by ScubaLife.com sponsorship. By 2017, SS-Green Light Racing decided to wind down its Truck Series operations and sell its equipment and owner points to Rick Ware Racing, allowing the team to concentrate fully on its Xfinity program.

The team’s growth was further strengthened by its technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, which provided engineering support, chassis preparation, and technical resources. This partnership helped the team remain competitive across various car numbers, including the No. 0, 07, 08, 14, 35, 55, 76, 77, 90, and 99.

SS GreenLight Racing Competitive Journey

SS-Green Light Racing has built a long and varied competitive journey spanning the Camping World Truck Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and a single ARCA Menards Series entry. Over more than two decades, the team has competed in 755 total races across national series, evolving from a small Truck Series operation into a stable multi-car Xfinity team with rotating driver lineups and technical partnerships.

Early Seasons and Development (2000-2007)

During its early years, Green Light Racing focused on building consistency in the Truck Series under Bobby Dotter’s leadership. The No. 07 truck became a fixture of the program, with drivers such as Jason Small, Bobby Dotter, and later Shane Sieg posting competitive results. In 2002, Small earned two top-ten finishes and finished twenty-second in the standings, marking one of the team’s stronger early campaigns.

The organization expanded its fleet by adding the No. 06 and No. 08 trucks, while developing relationships with sponsors including Sunbelt Rentals, Auto Air Colors, and Jack Daniel’s. By 2007, Tim Sauter finished sixteenth in Truck Series points and was runner-up to Willie Allen for Rookie of the Year, signaling the team’s growing competitiveness. Lester Buildings joined as a primary sponsor that season, although both Sauter and the sponsor departed at year’s end amid housing market struggles.

Breakthrough in the Truck Series (2008-2014)

The 2008 merger with SS Racing marked a turning point, bringing financial stability and expanded resources. The team fielded multiple trucks and attracted drivers such as Chad McCumbee, who became the organization’s first full-time driver in two years. McCumbee posted two seventh-place finishes in 2006 and was runner-up for Rookie of the Year, establishing the team’s reputation for developing emerging talent.

In 2010, the team experienced one of its strongest Truck Series seasons. Jason White won the pole at Daytona and ran inside the top five in points for much of the year, ultimately finishing tenth in the standings. The organization also expanded through new car numbers, including the No. 21 and No. 81, and brought in David Starr, who posted a top-ten finish at Chicagoland and ended the year ninth in points.

By 2012, the team fielded Ross Chastain in the No. 08, who scored a third-place finish at Bristol along with three top-ten results despite occasional start-and-park entries due to funding limitations. The team continued developing young drivers through partnerships, including a collaboration with B. J. McLeod Motorsports on the No. 08 in 2015 with Korbin Forrister. In 2014, the organization made its first Xfinity Series appearance, signaling a broader competitive vision.

Breakthrough in the Xfinity Series (2015-2020)

SS-Green Light Racing’s Xfinity program grew steadily through the latter half of the 2010s. Ray Black Jr. drove the No. 07 full-time in 2016 and 2017, recording nine top-twenty finishes in 2016 with a best result of fourteenth at Bristol. The team also fielded the No. 76 full-time in 2018 with Spencer Boyd, supported by Grunt Style, finishing twenty-sixth in points.

Gray Gaulding delivered one of the team’s most memorable Xfinity moments in 2019, finishing second in the MoneyLion 300 at Talladega Superspeedway. In 2020, the team navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic by partnering with Rick Ware Racing to share the No. 07 entry. Highlights included a second-place finish for Gaulding at Daytona when the top four wrecked on the final corner, as well as top-ten results from Garrett Smithley at Talladega and Jade Buford at Charlotte.

Modern Program and Current Direction (2021-Present)

The modern era of SS-Green Light Racing has been defined by expanded car numbers, rotating driver lineups, and manufacturer changes. In 2021, Joe Graf Jr. ran most of the races in the No. 07, scoring a top-ten finish in the Sparks 300. The following year, the team switched from Chevrolet to Ford and secured its first victory when Cole Custer won at Auto Club Speedway in a collaborative effort with Stewart–Haas Racing.

In 2023, the team returned to Chevrolet, with Blaine Perkins initially announced as the full-time driver of the No. 07 before a wide rotation took over. The No. 14 car was added in 2024 through a collaboration with Kaulig Racing, with Daniel Suárez driving at Daytona under Wendy’s sponsorship. Garrett Smithley was announced as the full-time driver of the No. 14 in 2025, with BRK Racing joining as a sponsorship and ownership partner.

On December 10, 2025, the team announced that it would field the No. 0 car primarily for Garrett Smithley in 2026, with Alex Labbé driving four road course events and Cole Custer driving five races starting at Las Vegas. On November 29, 2025, it was revealed that Josh Bilicki would run the No. 07 Chevrolet full-time in 2026. The team also made its ARCA Menards Series debut in 2024 at Daytona with Patrick Emerling in the No. 08 car.

The organization is best known for its superspeedway and drafting results, with consistent top-ten and top-five finishes at Daytona and Talladega.
