Layne Riggs Takes on Martinsville: Layne Riggs faced a daunting challenge at Martinsville Speedway, attempting to prove his mettle in the fiercely competitive NASCAR Xfinity Series. Behind the wheel of the No. 11 car for Kaulig Racing, Riggs, the 2022 NASCAR Weekly Series national champion and son of Cup Series veteran Scott Riggs, grappled with limited practice time and the weight of expectations.
In a sport where practice is scarce, Riggs felt the pressure keenly. “Running Late Models, even with the Martinsville race, we get six or seven hours worth of practice,” he shared. “Here, you get 15 minutes and youre told you need to pick it up x amount, and its hard racing against drivers and teams that have been doing it a very long time.”
Despite his experience at Martinsville in Late Models, Riggs found the transition to the Xfinity Series challenging. “It drives way worse,” he explained. “The best car here would feel like a back marker Late Model. Its so much heavier. The tires have no grip. Youre always sliding around. Its hard to apply the power down even when you have the grip you need.”
Riggs acknowledged the support of his team, highlighting the importance of their understanding. “I feel like the team here understands me when I explain things and try to tune the car,” he said. “But again, it sucks because we dont get to do a lot of tuning on the car.”
Despite the hurdles, Riggs expressed optimism about the future. Reflecting on his results, he said, “My results this weekend in the Xfinity Series will help me. Its just timing to make sure were with the right people. I have some opportunities to make sure we land on the right one.”
In the high-stakes world of NASCAR, Riggs’ journey serves as a testament to determination and resilience, embodying the spirit of aspiring racers striving to make their mark on the track.
