NASCAR Next Gen Challenge: Powering Up for Short Tracks

NASCAR Next Gen Challenge: In their annual State of the Series address, NASCAR executives Steve O’Donnell and Steve Phelps acknowledged the challenges faced by the new Next Gen platform on short tracks and road courses. While the Next Gen car has significantly enhanced racing at intermediate ovals, it has struggled to deliver the same excitement on shorter tracks, prompting the series to explore various solutions.

One of the most straightforward solutions, often advocated by drivers, is a substantial increase in horsepower, reminiscent of the powerful engines used in the early and mid-2010s. Drivers like Denny Hamlin have long called for more horsepower, hoping to make the cars more demanding to drive on shorter tracks. O’Donnell emphasized that all options are on the table, including boosting power, but also highlighted the complexity of the decision-making process.

“I think everything is up for consideration. We’ve proven that,” O’Donnell stated. “You have to factor in what are the costs involved as well, right? It’s not as simple as just upping the horsepower. You better be ready for all your Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to be onboard. It better make sense for any potential new OEM and technology. It’s not just a short-term answer.”

In addition to potential horsepower increases, the series is considering short-term solutions such as modifying gear ratios to reduce the need for shifting on short tracks and exploring changes in underbody designs to decrease downforce. These adjustments aim to enhance the racing experience in the near future.

However, if these measures fail to yield the desired outcomes, NASCAR remains open to exploring more radical changes. Given that NASCAR Cup Series engines produced around 900 horsepower just a few seasons ago in 2014, a return to high power outputs could be a promising choice, eliciting enthusiasm from both drivers and fans eager for thrilling short-track action.
