Youthful Final Four: Defending NASCAR’s Rising Stars

Youthful Final Four: NASCAR faced some skepticism regarding the star power and excitement of this weekend’s championship finale, but the racing organization is quick to defend the young final four drivers vying for the title.

The final four contenders, consisting of Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, and William Byron, collectively form the youngest group of championship contenders in the winner-take-all format since its inception in 2014. Larson is the sole contender with a prior Cup Series championship under his belt.

While Larson and Bell have a history of rivalry on dirt tracks, any past disputes have been settled. Byron and Blaney have a personal connection, as Byron is dating Blaney’s younger sister. Despite the acknowledgment by the drivers that this year’s showdown at Phoenix Raceway may lack the hype of previous years, NASCAR President Steve Phelps passionately defended the sport.

Phelps emphasized the incredible competition and variety that NASCAR drivers have faced throughout the season, including racing on various surfaces and tracks. He proclaimed NASCAR’s playoff system to be the toughest in sports and asserted that the champion crowned on Sunday would be truly deserving.

While some, like Blaney, bemoaned the absence of bad blood and rivalries among the final four, retired driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., part of NBC’s broadcast team for the race, characterized the final four as not very dynamic or aggressive. The 2023 playoff field, with an average age of 28 and Larson at 31 as the oldest, is notably missing popular driver Chase Elliott and experienced Cup champions like Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Busch.

The four remaining contenders are soft-spoken drivers who, except for Larson, have never claimed a Cup title. Bell is back in the championship race for the second consecutive year, while Blaney and Byron are making their first appearances.

NASCAR’s Chief Operating Officer, Steve O’Donnell, commended Larson and Bell as two of the best racers in the world and highlighted the importance of showcasing the talents of the athletes. He acknowledged the need for more engagement and storytelling around NASCAR’s young stars and mentioned an upcoming docuseries with Netflix about the playoffs that could potentially boost interest, akin to Formula One’s “Drive To Survive” series in North America.

O’Donnell stressed the importance of getting the drivers’ personalities out there and reconnecting with fans through autograph sessions and other initiatives to foster greater fan engagement. NASCAR is actively exploring ways to make the most of the crop of young drivers and ensure fans have reasons to embrace and support them.
