Denny Hamlin on Toyota 2023 Trials: As the curtains closed on the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, Denny Hamlin took a moment to reflect on the series of mechanical woes that plagued Toyota during the playoffs.
Throughout the intense playoff battles, Toyota faced an array of mechanical setbacks. From Hamlin’s own steering malfunction to Martin Truex Jr.’s engine failure, culminating in Christopher Bell‘s brake rotor issue during the Championship 4 finale, it was a challenging stretch for the manufacturer.
Speaking on his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin dismissed any suggestion that these mechanical mishaps hinted at a systemic problem within Toyota’s equipment.
“I see it more as coincidental occurrences,” Hamlin stated, addressing Toyota’s late-season mechanical misfortunes. “The issuesmy steering problem and Truex’s engine failure, and then Bell’s brake rotorthey’re all different. It’s coincidental. But undeniably, it played a role in the last three races.”
Hamlin delved into possible causes for Bell’s brake rotor malfunction and speculated on the factors that might have marred his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate’s race day.
“Typically, it could be excessive front-end car taping, hampering airflow for cooling. But I heard reports that the No. 20 had open cooling vents,” Hamlin noted. “This could suggest a potential bias towards right-front braking or other variables at play. It could be setup-related or part of the braking system. In any case, blown rotors stem from excessive heat; there’s no hidden mystery there.”
Acknowledging the unfortunate turn of events for Bell, Hamlin empathized, recognizing the missed opportunity it posed for his teammate.
“It was certainly a tough break for C-Bell,” lamented Hamlin. “He was giving his all, pushing forward through the field much like the No. 12. But ultimately, the car that performed the best emerged victorious.”
“Technically, they didn’t win the race, but they clinched the championship among the top four contenders,” Hamlin clarified. “It’s a departure from traditionmuch like when we saw a new victor emerge at Homestead who wasn’t part of the final four.”
Looking ahead, Toyota eyes the upcoming season with aspirations of clinching a NASCAR title. However, the conclusion of the 2023 season undoubtedly left a bitter taste for the manufacturer and its drivers.
