Molly Moran Journey: Empathy, NASCAR, and Comfort Zone Camp’s Impact

Molly Moran Journey: In Richmond, a longstanding nonprofit, Comfort Zone Camp (CZC), stands poised for a prestigious accolade, owing much to the unwavering commitment of a devoted volunteer. Established 24 years ago, CZC has served as a haven for youngsters coping with the loss of loved ones during their formative years, offering solace and a space to navigate grief.

CEO Lynne Hughes, the brain behind CZC, shaped this nonprofit following her own poignant experiences, losing her parents at ages nine and 12. “There weren’t resources available. You were considered fine if you pretended it didn’t impact you,” Hughes reflected, recounting the genesis of CZC. “I endeavored to create the resource I wish I had, aspiring to ease other children’s grief journey.”

Since its inception, CZC burgeoned, extending its reach to 11 physical sites across states, establishing virtual programs spanning all 50 states, aiding over 23,000 children.

With CZC’s 25th year on the horizon, the organization in Richmond is poised for expansion, planning ten additional camps in the near future. This ambitious timeline may see an acceleration, courtesy of a distinguished honor bestowed upon a devoted volunteer.

Molly Moran, bereaved of her mother to breast cancer at 21, found solace in volunteering with CZC. Her role as a ‘big buddy’ at camps, empathetically partnering with attending children, underscores shared experiences of loss. “It’s about bridging our losses to understand theirs, creating a sense of companionship and support,” Moran reflected on her volunteer work.

Now, Moran stands among four finalists for the esteemed NASCAR Foundation’s Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award, lauding commitment to children’s causes. “It’s surreal, truly,” Moran expressed, regarding her finalist status. “I’m thrilled CZC gets this recognition.”

While each finalist receives $25,000, the ultimate victor will claim $100,000. Determining the winner lies in the hands of the public, with voting open until November 17.

Amidst their NASCAR fandom, the finalists relished an extraordinary visit to Martinsville Speedway, meeting their favorite driver Brad Keselowski. “An unforgettable experience, shared with exceptional women,” Moran recalled.

Though victory is her hope, Moran cherishes the honor, embracing the chance to spotlight CZC. “Our sights are set high. Winning means more help for kids and increased CZC awareness,” she remarked optimistically.
