MBM Motorsports: The Lull and Potential Cup Series Return

MBM Motorsports, in their July declaration about stepping back from full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series competition, hinted at a potential return to the Cup Series. However, they’ve yet to make a reentry.

For the first time since their debut in the Xfinity Series full-time back in 2015, MBM Motorsports skipped the July race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, marking a shift from their consistent presence. They’ve been absent from a few races since then.

Throughout the last nine seasons, MBM Motorsports encountered instances of entering a race but failing to qualify, especially in 2023. However, their absence from a weekend without a single car and driver on the entry list hadn’t happened since 2014.

While their post-announcement plans were somewhat uncertain, barring a few race weekends, they did maintain a relatively regular presence in the Xfinity Series for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Nonetheless, Carl Long’s squad didn’t venture back into the Cup Series in 2023. After running consistently from 2017 to 2022, the 2023 season marked their first without any starts since 2016.

In 2020, they ran a full-time car, aiming for a similar venture in 2021 before scaling back. The team faced setbacks in 2022, failing to qualify for the Daytona 500 but later fielding a car at Circuit of the Americas in March and Talladega Superspeedway in April.

Despite speculations about their potential return for the Circuit of the Americas race in March this year, that entry didn’t materialize.

There’s no concrete confirmation about their return to the Cup Series. Pre-season, there were talks of their Cup car being prepped, and the team was “still working on securing sponsorship.”

While this notion persisted after the July announcement, the 2023 season passed without any appearances from the team.

Notably, unlike the Xfinity Series, where car numbers often exceed entry limits leading to DNQs, the Cup Series typically has fewer entries, making qualifying a significant challenge. This difference might have factored into the team’s absence from multiple Xfinity Series weekends after nine consistent years due to potential qualifying obstacles, given limited simulator time and practice.
