Kyle Larson Indy 500 Debut: The prestigious IndyCar event is set to showcase a new contender next year: NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Larson will make his debut in Americas most significant open-wheel race, piloting a Hendrick-backed, McLaren-operated car.
Roger Penske, who celebrated his 19th victory in the iconic race with Josef Newgarden this year, expressed enthusiasm for Larsons involvement. Larson, the 2021 Cup champion, plans to participate in the Indianapolis 500 and swiftly head to Charlotte to race in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 that evening.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Larson to the Speedway,” stated Penske. “Rick [Hendrick] spoke to me about Larson running, and while we hadn’t experienced much success for a couple of years, McLaren did. We’ve been supportive all along. His skills and the support he commands in the Midwest are extraordinary.”
“He completed his rookie test in Indianapolis in October without any hitches. Kurt Busch has previously raced there. His talent is undeniable, and this is something he genuinely desires,” Penske continued.
“Blaney mentioned to me in recent weeks that he’d like to compete at Indy,” Penske shared. “We’re open to having everyone join us, and if we can have both the double and maximize Memorial Day with races in both Charlotte and Indianapolis, itll be fantastic. Larson’s involvement is generating significant fan interest, and we’re already witnessing that in ticket sales. He’ll be a valuable addition to Indianapolis and the 500.”
Responding to inquiries about his intentions to race for Penske at Indy, Ryan Blaney commented, “Honestly, it’s been on my mind for a couple of years. If you can do the double, it’s a pretty cool achievement.”
“Larson is undertaking it next year, which is exciting. I’ve floated the idea with RP for some time now, and I might bring it up again,” Blaney added, hinting at his interest in participating.
Blaney commenced his racing journey in open-wheel quarter midget racing on ovals before transitioning to stock cars. His father, Dave, was a notable sprint car and World of Outlaws racer.
“I believe there are few who can achieve the double,” Blaney remarked about the challenge. “It’s a select group, and it would be a unique experience.”
“At my stage, it would be quite fitting, given my appreciation for all forms of motorsport. Experiencing something like that is appealing. The nostalgia and the prospect of completing perhaps 1,100 miles on the racetrack in a single day is remarkable,” Blaney expressed.
“It’s fantastic for Kyle to undertake it, and maybe someday I’ll have the privilege too,” he concluded, leaving the door open for a potential future participation.
