Daytona 500 Rain Delay and Unexpected Hurdle

As dark clouds floated ominously over the Daytona International Speedway, anticipation quickly turned into frustration for fans and drivers.

The 67th Daytona 500, a marquee event in the NASCAR calendar, was plagued by persistent rain, testing the patience of all involved. Despite officials’ efforts to outmaneuver the weather by advancing the start time to 2 p.m. ET, only 11 laps were completed before the skies opened, forcing a red flag.

As the rain pounded the track, drivers and teams hunkered down for a lengthy wait, yearning for the moment the race could resume.

The downpour eventually ceased, but not without leaving the track saturated, necessitating an arduous three-hour drying process.

Among the drivers, Jimmie Johnson faced an unexpected hurdle, not only from the weather but also from his attire. Observers noted his absence from the planned ‘Shaq Special’ suit, instead donning the familiar Carvana fire suit.

Jimmie Johnson Explains the Firesuit Mishap

The rain may have paused the Daytona 500, but Jimmie Johnson’s race-day drama was just starting to unfold. During a rain delay, Johnson recounted his unexpected journey on the ‘Never Settle’ podcast. As the skies cleared, Johnson found himself locked out of his motorhome with his crucial gear trapped inside.

“So the rain delay happens and I go in motorhome. I change out of the shocked fire suit, put on my street clothes, go outside. Someone exits the motorhome, shuts the door. I hear over the loudspeakers drivers to your cars like oh boy. I got to go, so I go to open the door. To get back on the bus. And the door handle won’t operate. My suit shoes, everything is inside.” – (Johnson)

In his haste to change back into his firesuit, he realized the handle wouldn’t cooperate, leaving his suit and shoes inaccessible. Johnson sprinted to the garage area, finding a spare Carvana firesuit to don before rushing to his car. The spectacle delayed his re-entry as officials and fellow drivers awaited his arrival.

“So I’ve hooked it into the garage area and pull out one of my just traditional carvana fire suits and throw it on. And that’s what I wore. So nothing like a little drama to kind of freak you out. Once I got to the car, it delayed me. All the other drivers were the cars and officials were like, where are you, man? We’re going to start cars. Give me three minutes, I’ll get buckled in.” – (Johnson)

Despite the mishap, Johnson retained his composure, requesting merely three minutes to secure himself in the car. The unfortunate, yet humorous incident added unexpected drama to his race day, as fans and staff shared in the light-hearted chaos, capturing moments with Shaq’s oversized suit.
