For over half a century, NASCAR has struggled to control the unpredictable and hazardous conditions typically seen at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. These two tracks, more than any others on the Cup circuit, breed chaos. However, Joey Logano, a three-time victor in his 32 career Cup starts on Talladega’s high banks, has suggestions.
Even though Logano has numerous thoughts and ideas about how to render an unpredictable and dangerous oval – like Talladega – safer, he admits that he doesn’t have the final solution. “Every action has a reaction, and we may not know exactly what that is,” Logano told Frontstretch.com.
Logano explained his perspective, saying, “There was a point in time where the (air) bubble behind the car was bigger. You take drag off the cars, and that creates a little more distance between them. I’d probably look in that direction: to separate the cars and not make it so easy to get up there and push.” Logano seems to suggest making the ‘bubble’ pop harder, contrasting the current situation where cars can bump the one in front on command.
Logano believes that another area of focus should be the installation of A-Post flaps on cars specifically designed for Daytona and ‘Dega. He optimistically noted their ongoing efforts, saying, “They have a plan (but) time tells on all of that stuff. They’re working on something, and it takes a minute to implement it all.”
The racing veteran also commented on the effectiveness of potential changes. He cautioned, “there are a lot of things in the wind tunnel that says it’s going to be better and then you get to the racetrack and there are just so many other variables that the wind tunnel can’t show.” He further hinted at the difference in perspective between racing teams and NASCAR, urging for patience as these new solutions are tested and implemented.
Logano hopes that the new A-post flap will make a considerable difference and is waiting to see if it performs on the racetrack. Logano concluded, “Surely, it won’t hurt.”
In essence, Joey Logano champions new tactics to curb the superspeedways chaos in NASCAR racing. As Logano points out, it is a complex issue with no easy answers. However, his insightful opinions and suggestions open up the possibility for safer and less unpredictable races. It remains to be seen how his ideas will impact the future of NASCAR superspeedways.
