Kyle Larson addresses Indianapolis 500 thumbs-up controversy, says frustration led to regrettable gesture

Kyle Larson addresses Indianapolis 500 thumbs-up controversy after an incident with Scott McLaughlin that drew attention during the major race in Indiana. This week at Nashville Superspeedway, Larson explained that mounting frustration led to his response, which he now regrets.

How the Controversy Unfolded at Indianapolis

During the Indianapolis 500, Larson, who competes in both NASCAR and IndyCar events, gave a thumbs-up gesture toward fellow driver Scott McLaughlin following an on-track incident. The gesture quickly became a focal point among fans and media due to its timing and apparent frustration. Both Larson and McLaughlin have since communicated and have resolved any tension between them. According to sources, the two drivers remain on friendly terms, placing the incident behind them.

Larson’s Explanation of the Incident

At a media session in Nashville, Larson detailed the difficulties he faced during the race, referring to the tight schedule of the “Double” (competing in two major races in one day), delays from rain, and other setbacks as sources of growing irritation. He explained that the delayed track drying process heightened his frustration, which culminated in the regrettable gesture.

Larson shared that the emotions of the stressful race circumstances affected his reaction, acknowledging that he was not proud of his response at the moment.

“So, yeah, I was just, you know, I was frustrated because the rain was so light and the delay of the track drying when it was already dry. It took whatever it was, 45 minutes. Then we’re coming to get lights out to go green, and I see somebody crash. So, then I just kind of reacted, and you know, with more frustration, and yeah, I shouldn’t have done that.”

Larson Reflects on His Actions and Feelings After the Incident

When asked to reflect further, Larson expressed regret about the gesture and suggested that emotions can overcome even experienced competitors during intense moments. He emphasized that hindsight made him wish he could take back his actions, and he felt embarrassed by the situation. Larson paid respect to McLaughlin, describing him as consistently respectful and friendly in the racing world.

“So, I wish, you know, it’s all of us. Everybody here, you know, everybody in life wishes they could go back and not do something or do something differently. That’s one of those moments for me, and I feel like I’m usually pretty good about not keying up or not doing gestures and stuff. But yeah, just kind of let my frustration get the best of me there. Was a bit embarrassing, and, you know, I felt bad. You know, you never want to see anybody crash out of the biggest race in the world before the green, and somebody who has always been super respectful to me and really nice to me. Yeah, I just didn’t even realize it was him until I was close to alongside of him. So, yeah, just wish I could have taken that back.”

Resolution and Looking Ahead in the Racing Season

Despite the controversy, both drivers have chosen to move on. McLaughlin, who drives for Team Penske, crashed out before the green flag in what is considered one of the most important races of the season. Neither competitor delivered a career-best performance during the event, and both recognize the need to focus on the rest of their schedules. With the incident resolved, fans are encouraged to do the same and look forward to the upcoming weeks of racing competition at venues like Nashville Superspeedway. The episode underscores the emotional toll of high-pressure situations faced by drivers such as Larson and McLaughlin.
