Conor Daly Backs Rinus Veekay for Team Penske Amid IndyCar Driver Rumors and Will Power Uncertainty

Conor Daly has come forward with his views on recent Team Penske IndyCar driver rumors, suggesting that Rinus Veekay deserves a chance with a leading team such as Team Penske. The Roger Penske-owned outfit faces a potential opening for 2026, as Will Power is in the final year of his current contract. Power, a two-time IndyCar champion, continues to perform strongly for the team this season, presenting uncertainty over his future after this year.

Despite Power’s standing as the team‘s most reliable driver, speculation around the No. 12 seat includes AJ Foyt Racing’s David Malukas as another contender. Still, Daly believes that Veekay, who has shown remarkable performance with Dale Coyne Racing this season, should be considered for the top position. Speaking on his Speed Street podcast, Daly said:

“I know people talk about David Malukas going to Penske. Put Rinus there. Put Rinus in the 12 (Power’s car).”

Almost immediately, Daly softened his remarks, clarifying that he does not wish for Power to lose his seat but wants to emphasize Veekay’s worthiness for a leading drive:

“Actually, I don’t want anyone to get fired from Penske,”

Daly continued.

“I don’t think Will Power deserves to be out of there. Will Power should be there. But if there’s anyone that should get a top seat, Rinus Veekay is the guy, one million percent. I hope we see it. I think Rinus is an absolute weapon behind the wheel. He’s very talented.”

Rinus Veekay’s Breakout Performance Strengthens His Candidacy Amid Market Speculation

Daly’s remarks followed Veekay’s impressive drive at Indy Toronto on July 20. Veekay, piloting the No. 18 Honda for Dale Coyne Racing, began in ninth and took the lead after capitalizing on early cautions. Although he could not maintain his front position due to a strategic move by Pato O’Ward’s Arrow McLaren team, Veekay secured his first podium in 60 starts. It also marked Dale Coyne Racing’s first podium in two years, highlighting the significance of his result.

Meanwhile, Daly endured difficulties during the same weekend, unable to manage a two-stop strategy effectively, illustrating the highs and lows drivers face throughout the season.

Will Power’s Uncertain Future Sets the Stage for the 2026 Driver Market

Rinus Veekay entered the upcoming 2025 season as one of the last drivers to sign a contract but has since become the center of attention in the Team Penske IndyCar driver rumors for 2026. The future moves of Will Power, whose contract with Team Penske is due to expire, will likely influence how the rest of the market progresses.

In discussing his own plans with Dale Coyne Racing for the next season, Veekay acknowledged the shifting landscape, stating:

“Of course, Dale and me too are very interested in working with each other again in the future and next year. But I need to see what my options are right now. My stock has been pretty good. It’s gone up quite considerably. You know, I am hearing some chatter around, but it’s still not clear what the silly season is gonna bring,”

Anticipating the Domino Effect of Power’s Decision in the IndyCar Offseason

Will Power recently shared that he will resume contract negotiations with Roger Penske in August, a conversation that could set off numerous changes across the team and the wider field. Drivers, managers, and organizations are closely observing the situation, as Power’s next steps may trigger a series of moves impacting the 2026 IndyCar season lineup and team strategies.

The high level of uncertainty and shifting fortunes within the paddock has made the 2026 silly season one of the most turbulent in recent years. As the driver market awaits Power’s decision, Team Penske IndyCar driver rumors will likely dominate discussions and keep both fans and insiders on edge throughout the remainder of this season.
