Jimmie Johnson Returns for Historic San Diego NASCAR Race

Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion and owner of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, announced plans to compete in the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series event at Naval Base Coronado, set for June 19–21, 2026. This marks a significant reunion for Johnson with his Southern California roots, as the event is set to bring America’s premier stock car series to San Diego for the first time, making it a landmark occasion in the Jimmie Johnson San Diego NASCAR story.

Jimmie Johnson Announces Homecoming at Brandweek

The news was revealed by Johnson during Brandweek in Atlanta, confirming his intention to race in the inaugural NASCAR San Diego Weekend. Having grown up in El Cajon, California, Johnson described the chance to compete so close to home as a lifelong dream come true.

“Growing up just miles from San Diego, I dreamed about racing here in a NASCAR vehicle someday, but I never thought it would be possible. I just came to the realization that there would be no way NASCAR could race in that city – as there would be nowhere to put a track,”

said Johnson, NASCAR Cup Series Champion.

“So, it’s just mind-blowing to me that NASCAR made this a reality. To come back home, compete in front of my community, the military, my family, and friends, and do it with Carvana and LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, this is one of those full-circle experiences I will never forget. It’s a lifelong dream,”

Significance of the San Diego Race for Johnson

For Johnson, this event is not just a return to competition but a meaningful celebration of his origins and achievements. Competing in the same region where his journey began underscores the full-circle nature of his racing career.

“When I think about everything this sport has given me and where it all started, being able to race in San Diego at this level feels like my career has come full circle,”

Johnson, NASCAR Cup Series Champion, shared.

“Starting out on two wheels racing motorcycles throughout the west coast and now being able to race on four in the same region is something I never thought I would see. Additionally, my grandparents were military and are buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery nearby the base, so it’s an honor to race there – this is going to be very special,”

Carvana and Legacy Motor Club Team Up for SoCal Appearance

Carvana, which has partnered with Johnson over multiple seasons, will again serve as a primary sponsor. The No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE—featuring a soon-to-be-unveiled special paint scheme for the San Diego race—will symbolize the ongoing collaboration built on creativity and authenticity.

This continued partnership with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB emphasizes the significance of returning to race in his home state, reinforcing Johnson’s established connections within the community and the broader NASCAR fanbase.

What the San Diego Event Means for NASCAR and the Community

The inaugural race at Naval Base Coronado is set to bring motorsports enthusiasts together in one of America’s most recognizable coastal cities. For the local San Diego region, the event highlights both the city and its military ties, with Johnson’s direct connection adding to the celebration. Fans, families, and service members will have an opportunity to witness a historic moment in the sport’s ongoing evolution. As NASCAR prepares for its debut at this iconic location, Johnson’s participation promises inspiration and excitement for both new and long-following supporters.
