Tony Stewart on John Force: “A One-of-a-Kind Legend” Retires

Tony Stewart on John Force brings together two icons of motorsports as Stewart reacts to the retirement of 16-time Funny Car champion John Force, whose career spanned an astounding 46 years. Stewart, with a strong presence in both NASCAR and NHRA, described Force’s influence, impact, and path to retirement in a recent interview, reflecting on what Force has meant to the world of drag racing and beyond.

John Force’s Distinguished Career Comes to a Close

John Force made the decision to retire last week, sharing the news via a video on John Hunt Racing’s official X account. His departure marks the end of a legendary era in drag racing, as Force holds 157 national event victories and 16 NHRA championships as a driver, along with an AHRA Funny Car title. In addition, Force has an impressive 22 championships as a car owner, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest drag racers of all time.

Tony Stewart, who has competed alongside Force in the NHRA paddock, openly discussed the disappointment and understanding among fans and the racing community regarding Force’s retirement. He shared how even those not involved in drag racing recognized Force’s name and celebrated his extraordinary achievements.

“I think even as disappointing as this is for everyone, I mean we all understand what the circumstances are and why and appreciate everything that he’s done for motorsports as a whole. I wasn’t even into drag racing and I knew who John Force was and was a big fan of John,” Stewart told Pockrass.

“You get the opportunity to actually race around the guy and be in the pit with him and get to know him before he got hurt… I don’t know anybody can emulate that. John’s just a one of a kind personality. I mean, He truly is a larger-than-life personality. That’s the only way to describe him.” Stewart continued.

Health Challenges Lead to Retirement

Force’s retirement comes after a serious crash at the NHRA Virginia Nationals in June 2024, which left him with a significant brain injury. At 76, Force’s journey toward recovery has been a long and demanding one, prompting him and those around him to accept that stepping away from competition is both necessary and prudent for his well-being.

As Force works steadily through his recovery, Tony Stewart emphasized the importance of Force cherishing the legacy he’s built. Stewart acknowledged the demanding nature of returning from such an injury at Force’s age, but also encouraged Force to focus on personal fulfillment, time with family, and the rewards earned from decades at the top of his sport.

“He’s just still on the road to recovery and it’s a long road and at his age it’s not easy, but he’s doing the work, he’s putting the effort in. But he needs to enjoy what he’s building and he’s got a huge family and grandkids now and he needs to celebrate that and enjoy that,” the former NASCAR team owner said.

A Legacy That Shaped Drag Racing

Throughout his decades-long career, John Force redefined what it means to be a champion in drag racing, influencing fellow drivers and fans alike. His presence extended beyond winning races; Force became known for his engaging personality and for representing the very essence of competitive spirit in racing.

Tony Stewart’s own racing journey has included both NASCAR and NHRA success, with highlights such as his Top Fuel victory at the 2025 NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas and capturing the 2025 regular-season Top Fuel championship.
