This incident occurred during his time racing in the IMCA Modified division. By the time he entered his fifth event, Busch was involved in a contentious on-track moment—aggressively passing another competitor while battling for third place. The other driver, enraged by the maneuver, waited for Busch in the pits, only to be stunned upon realizing that Busch was just a teenager. “I was battling for a guy battling with a guy for third. And I was only 15 at the time, and you’re supposed to be 16, but I may have, allegedly, a birth certificate. So back in that day, you know, no social media, all that sort of stuff. So they didn’t really know how old people were; the Internet was just kind of brand new. And anyways, I dumped a guy for third place because he was blocking me.”
The altercation did not escalate as expected. The other driver, upon approaching Busch’s car, was taken aback when he realized Busch was just a kid, as Busch explained further:
“And so after the race, he wanted to fight in the pits, and I couldn’t get out of my car, so I stuck in my car. But when he came over to yell at me, he was like, ‘Oh my god, he’s just a kid,’ he added.
The situation grew even more complicated when the older driver allegedly contacted a local news station to investigate and obtain Busch’s public records, aiming to confirm his real age. Despite this early controversy, Busch continued his ascent and eventually debuted in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2004 with Hendrick Motorsports.
