Jimmie Johnson Makes Truck Series Return in San Diego

In a much-anticipated move, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson will participate in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for the first time since 2008 this June. The Jimmie Johnson Truck Series return is set for Naval Base Coronado, just outside San Diego, bringing the celebrated driver back to his Southern California roots.

Jimmie Johnson to Compete in TRICON Garage Entry

On Thursday, TRICON Garage revealed that Johnson will drive for the team in the June 19 Truck Series event at Naval Base Coronado. This marks Johnson’s second career appearance in the Truck Series, having previously raced at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2008, where he finished in 34th place. The return is particularly significant as Naval Base Coronado is roughly a half-hour from Johnson’s hometown, El Cajon, California, promising a special homecoming for the 50-year-old veteran driver.

Busy Race Weekend Near Hometown

In addition to his Truck Series run, Johnson will take part in the June 21 NASCAR Cup Series race at the same venue with Legacy Motor Club, the team he co-owns. This double-duty weekend highlights Johnson’s strong connection to his home fans and showcases his enduring passion for competition. Johnson’s participation may extend further, as he is eligible to join the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series event on June 20, presenting the possibility of racing in all three major events over the weekend at the San Diego-area track. Johnson has not raced in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series since 2013, but his potential return would give home supporters more opportunities to see the legendary driver in action.

Looking Ahead to the Daytona 500 and Beyond

Johnson’s active schedule does not end in San Diego. He is set to compete in the 2026 Daytona 500, representing Legacy Motor Club, aided by an Open Exemption Provisional that secures his place in the starting field for the February 15 race. This guarantees fans another chance to watch Johnson take on NASCAR’s biggest stage once again.

With over 700 Cup Series starts, Johnson’s continued presence brings excitement to multiple series and signals his ongoing commitment to NASCAR. His homecoming at Naval Base Coronado, involvement with organizations like TRICON Garage and Legacy Motor Club, and scheduled Daytona 500 participation all point to an impactful 2026 season for both the driver and his many supporters in California and beyond.
