Austin Hill, regarded as a specialist on superspeedways in the recently renamed NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, approaches Daytona with a confidence built on repeated success. While a mechanical issue with his rear end gear halted his winning streak last year, Hill remains undeterred, ready to challenge for victory at the 2.5-mile circuit. His ability to navigate the intense, close-quarters nature of Daytona’s racing is seen as a key factor in his ongoing success at this marquee event.
“I actually have a lot of fun with it,”
said Hill, who begins his fifth year competing full-time driving the No. 21 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. The intensity and pressure of Daytona seem to motivate Hill, as he maintains a focused approach to these high-stakes opening weekends.
“Everyone talks about pressure and questions if the pressure is going to get to you. But for me, I just go into Daytona weekends with the same mindset that I always do.”

Hill’s strategy is centered on staying competitive at the front of the field and avoiding incidents that are common in superspeedway races.
“We try to run up front, do our thing, stay out of wrecks, and hope that it’s enough at the end,”
Hill stated, highlighting the balance required between aggression and caution when racing at Daytona.
Last season, Hill’s teammate at Richard Childress Racing, Jesse Love, captured the Daytona season opener and later secured the series championship at Phoenix Raceway. These strong team performances underscore RCR’s continued presence as a force within the series.

Connor Zilisch, whose rookie campaign was marked by an astounding ten victories out of thirty-two starts, has advanced to the NASCAR Cup Series with Trackhouse Racing. “Obviously there is a lot of want and desire to go back-to-back at Daytona, a lot of want and desire to start the year off with a win and get RCR’s fifth win in a row,”

“Definitely looking forward to it. I’m kind of tired of the offseason. I’m just ready to get back in my swing of things.”
Love also shared insight into his mindset entering 2024.
“I’m excited, not nervous or anything like that, which is different from past years where I typically feel like I am a little bit nervous to start the season. But now I have my feet under me, I know what to expect and what not to expect, and mostly I am a little bit wiser now to understand similar things that can happen that I don’t normally think of.”
Veteran Drivers and Daytona 500 Crossovers
With Zilisch moving up, experienced driver Justin Allgaier—a previous series champion—emerges as a top contender. Allgaier is set to participate in both the DAYTONA 500 and the O’Reilly Auto Parts race, enhancing his pursuit for another successful season. Recently, Allgaier secured his spot in the DAYTONA 500 field, piloting the No. 40 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, prevailing as one of eight Open entries trying to make the prestigious race.
