Floyd Mayweather Jr., the renowned former NASCAR Cup Series team owner and world champion boxer, has revealed plans to end his retirement from professional boxing after a scheduled spring exhibition with Mike Tyson. Mayweather’s announcement comes nearly nine years after stepping away from the ring, while his former NASCAR team undergoes significant changes.
Mayweather’s Dual Sports Ventures After Boxing Retirement
Mayweather, originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, retired from professional boxing in August 2017 with a 50-0 record, capping his career with a knockout victory over Conor McGregor. Since leaving the ring, Mayweather explored other arenas, including joining the wave of celebrity team owners in the NASCAR Cup Series. His rumored association with the sport, specifically through The Money Team Racing, began around 2018 and gained momentum by late 2019 with the intent to compete full-time in 2020.
The Money Team Racing’s Brief NASCAR Journey
Although initial plans did not materialize immediately, The Money Team Racing officially made its Cup Series debut in 2022. Using the No. 50 Chevrolet, as a nod to Mayweather’s unblemished boxing record, the team entered the 2022 Daytona 500 with Kaz Grala, who finished 26th, and subsequently raced at Circuit of the Americas and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Grala’s performances included placing 25th and 23rd, followed by Conor Daly’s 34th place finish at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval.
In 2023, Conor Daly piloted the No. 50 car in the Daytona 500 and at Circuit of the Americas. Daly’s qualifying run for the “Great American Race” was a noteworthy achievement for the team. Despite these efforts, The Money Team Racing maintained a limited presence in the Cup Series, focusing only on select events.
Transition to Team AmeriVet and Recent Activities
The organization underwent a rebranding in 2024, emerging as Team AmeriVet under new ownership. Ty Dillon drove the No. 50 car during the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day Weekend, representing not only AmeriVet Securities—a service-disabled veteran-owned broker-dealer—as a main sponsor, but also as a partial team owner. Later in the season, Jeb Burton took the wheel for the Phoenix Raceway finale on Veterans Day Weekend.
Burt Myers attempted to qualify for the Cook Out Clash exhibition race at Bowman Gray Stadium in both 2025 and 2026 but did not make the starting grid. The only points race start for the team after 2024 was at Martinsville Speedway in March 2025, again with Myers as the driver. Throughout its 11 Cup Series appearances, including nine points races, the team has consistently utilized the No. 50, even as 23XI Racing used it for three races in 2024 to celebrate Mobil 1’s 50th anniversary.
Current Status and What Lies Ahead
At this time, Team AmeriVet has no confirmed entries for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. Floyd Mayweather Jr., meanwhile, is actively preparing for new boxing events, beginning with his scheduled spring exhibition against Mike Tyson, followed by an anticipated rematch with Manny Pacquiao in September—years after their historic Fight of the Century. This ongoing activity underscores Mayweather’s continued presence in major sports, while the story of his NASCAR Cup Series team owner days stands as a unique chapter in the crossover between motorsports and boxing.
