NASCAR Caution-Free Race: McDowell’s Remarkable Victory and Racing Surprises

NASCAR Caution-Free Race: The third Verizon 200 at The Brickyard, which may have been the last race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road track, featured several unexpected turns that startled me and others. Races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are notoriously chaotic. That’s why NASCAR changed restart zone regulations there. This race had just one yellow flag for Justin Haley on the second lap. There needed to be more track spinouts.

The race ended with a cool green flag run of 77 laps, practically the whole 82-lap distance. It lasted 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 59 seconds. The autos were fast.

All 39 drivers raced nonstop for over two hours. This challenging race was won by 0.937 seconds. Chase Elliott finished second behind Michael McDowell. People are starting to worry in a different way.

Since 2017, stage breaks have changed. No more one-warning races. In 2023, road course events lost stage warnings. Thus, identical scenarios may occur again.

A June Sonoma Raceway NASCAR race was similar. The 49-lap race was uninterrupted—the Sonoma Cup’s second-longest green flag wave. The 110-lap race included two stops. The much-anticipated one-caution race occurred during the Indianapolis event on Sunday, August 13.

Auto Club Speedway has not seen this since March 2012. The rain stopped a race then. They completed 129 of 200 laps before stopping. October 2002 was Talladega Superspeedway’s last yellow flag-free race. This intrigues people. Sunday’s race showed it’s possible, albeit unlikely. Sunday’s Cup race was the sixth without a caution since 1993. Date, Track, Laps, Warnings

Wisconsin’s Road America racetrack. It hosts racing events like NASCAR Cup Series—Road America’s July 2022 event, maybe 62.

The 2010 Cup Series season, 13 years ago, was quite different. Back then, drivers, vehicles, and teams were additional. Some things have survived history, while others have disappeared.

Michael McDowell and Front Row Motorsports, who struggled in the late 2000s and early 2010s, remain important in racing. They evolved. Since 2005, FRM has won three Cup races. David Ragan won Talladega in 2013. Chris Buescher won Pocono Raceway in 2016. McDowell won the Daytona 500 in 2021.

These recent triumphs may have been due to chance or superspeedway racing’s unpredictability. McDowell and FRM’s IMS win was unexpected and showed their remarkable talents. McDowell started fourth and led 54 of 82 laps, 65.9%, to win the race.

Before the Indianapolis race, McDowell led the most laps. He led 34 laps at Gateway World Wide Technology Raceway in June 2022. He led 90 laps at Watkins Glen International last year out of 452 starts. This was his greatest lap lead percentage.

Guess what? In 1,273 attempts, McDowell and FRM scored the same. It’s shocking! Start number 453 and entry number 1273 lined up better than planned.

After Sunday’s race, FRM General Manager Jerry Freeze and No. 34 car crew chief Travis Peterson declared themselves no longer outsiders. Their triumph didn’t surprise them either. They’re confident because McDowell and the No. 34 squad didn’t appear like outsiders to someone who hadn’t seen them play.

If you recall McDowell’s early 2010s supremacy and FRM’s success, Sunday’s dominance is totally different: the little teams from before have become the major teams of today. McDowell, FRM, and Ford led after this win.
