NASCAR Commitment to Diversity in the Face of Legal Challenge

NASCAR Commitment to Diversity: NASCAR President Steve Phelps has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion despite a recent complaint filed by the conservative group America First Legal with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The complaint, led by Stephen Miller, accuses NASCAR and Rev Racing of “illegal discrimination against White, male Americans” through their diversity initiatives.

Phelps emphasized NASCAR’s dedication to bringing people together through the love of racing. He stated, “We are going to continue efforts to have the entire country, the entire world, come to our facilities, watch it on television because it’s about a love for racing. Racing is a great opportunity for people to come together.”

America First Legal has requested the EEOC to investigate NASCAR and Rev Racing’s programs, including the “diversity driver development program, diversity pit crew development program,” and the “NASCAR diversity internship program,” alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These programs were recently updated to seek applicants with “diverse backgrounds and experiences.”

While NASCAR’s diversity initiatives have made progress over the past two decades, the sport still predominantly comprises white male drivers and team members. In the Cup Series, there is limited racial and gender diversity among drivers. NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Combine, which featured 15 participants from various backgrounds, reflects the organization’s efforts to diversify its fan base.

Phelps emphasized NASCAR’s determination to broaden its fan base across different demographics, including age, race, and gender. He stated, “We are going to continue to make sure that we are broadening our fan base across every segment of this population, young, old, black, white, male, female, all of it, because that’s how we’re going to grow. We’re going to do it with all kinds of programs to meet potential race fans where they are or existing race fans wherever they are.”
