Fox 2024 NASCAR Broadcast: Harvick’s Full-Time Shift Signals Change

Fox 2024 NASCAR Broadcast: The NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway marked the conclusion of Fox’s 2023 broadcast schedule. With NBC taking over for the remaining races of the season, an impending announcer addition for 2024 brought an end to Fox’s broadcast approach initiated at the beginning of the 2022 season.

Following Jeff Gordon’s departure in 2021 to focus on his role as Vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, Fox chose not to hire a third full-time analyst alongside Mike Joy and Clint Bowyer. Instead, various individuals such as Tony Stewart, Jamie McMurray, or Danica Patrick joined Joy and Bowyer on occasion, and sometimes several others contributed to the race commentary.

While occasional guest appearances in the booth aren’t ruled out for next year, the approach of rotating announcers for the third spot is expected to change after two years.

Kevin Harvick, retiring from his 23rd season in the Cup Series and 10th with Stewart-Haas Racing, will join the Fox broadcast booth full-time. Fox’s decision to maintain a similar booth approach in 2023 as in 2022 hinted early on about Harvick’s potential retirement from driving.

The speculation regarding Fox’s intent to reserve the third spot for the 2014 champion rather than hiring a replacement gained traction. The trio of Joy, Bowyer, and Harvick will mark the third unique full-time combination in the Fox booth since 2019, succeeding the era of Joy, Gordon, and Darrell Waltrip.

Waltrip retired in 2019, resulting in Joy and Gordon operating as a duo in 2020 before Bowyer’s addition. His racing career culminated in 2020, transitioning him into the broadcasting realm.

Fox’s 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season commences with the Busch Light Clash preseason exhibition race at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, February 4. The season’s inaugural points race is the 66th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, February 18.
