Former champion Austin Cindric clinched a thrilling victory over Ryan Preece at the resurgence of the NASCAR Cup Series with the Jack Link’s 500. Following a break, the action-packed event took place at the iconic Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama, on Sunday.
On the track, Cindric, driving the No. 2 Team Penske car for Ford, managed to stay ahead of Preece’s No. 60, notching up a close win by 0.022 seconds. A gripping showdown saw the two Fords run side-by-side, ahead of William Byron and Kyle Larson‘s Chevrolets, with only 17 laps to go. The exceptionally close race saw both drivers maintaining clean lines off Turn 4 for the last time, marking Austin’s third career win in his 125th start.
Preece’s narrow defeat, however, made headlines as the racing duo’s intense rivalry culminated in an impressive showdown. Austin’s victory lap was secured with swift service on the No. 2 car during the final pit stop which gridded at 25th as it hit the pit road.

Contrarily, a disappointing day for the 2023 champion, Ryan Blaney, saw him end up in the 39th spot post a wreck in the first caution of his fourth DNF this season.

Polesitter Zane Smith, who led the pack with his first career pole qualifying spot, faced an early challenge from Austin Dillon, Michael McDowell, and Kyle Busch. However, the Toyota contingent quickly countered by taking the top line of the 2.66-mile superspeedway, putting Fords and Chevys behind in the 60-lap Stage 1.
The NASCAR resumption at Talladega has definitely brought forth some unexpected turns. A mishap involving a scramble between Christopher Bell and Chris Buescher caused a stir when Bell’s No. 20 crashed into the inside wall, marking the 188-lap race’s toughest hit.
Nonetheless, this did not deter Larson from recording his first Talladega stage win—a moment soured though by a penalty for speeding on pit road. Meanwhile, Bubba Wallace increased the anticipation entailing the final stage by maxing the bonus points and holding off Logano and Larson to win Stage 2, with Cindric landing the fourth spot.
