Connor Zilisch dominates Xfinity Portland race with a commanding display on Saturday, leading nearly the entire distance at Portland International Raceway until late-race restarts changed the tone of an otherwise quiet event. After controlling the pace for most of the day, Zilisch faced unpredictable turnarounds and tense moments near the finish line, highlighting both his skill and the drama inherent in NASCAR Xfinity Series racing.
Zilisch Takes Early Command with Unchallenged Lead
Throughout the majority of the race, Zilisch seemed almost untouched by the competition, claiming the lead from the outset and setting a steady, blistering pace. He led the opening 67 laps and, as this was a standalone road course event, never lost track position during pit stops. This allowed him to widen his advantage, wrapping up the first stage with a 14-second margin and capturing the second stage by eight seconds, effectively distancing himself from any immediate threats.
As the laps wound down without much opposition, Zilisch even acknowledged the monotony from the driver’s seat.
“Yeah, it’s tough you know, when you’re leading by that much and just kind of out front by yourself,”
Zilisch said.
“It’s certainly a little bit … it gets boring, you know.”
—Zilisch, Driver
The atmosphere in the cockpit reflected the lack of on-track action, and Zilisch offered further insight:
“It’s hard to believe, but you know, it does get boring when you’re just making laps and they keep telling you to slow down, slow down, slow down. And as a race car driver you don’t wanna slow down.”

Final Restarts Bring Chaos and High-Pressure Decisions
The calm dominance was disrupted during the final restarts. Initially, Zilisch’s JR Motorsports teammate helped push Austin Hill into the lead on the second-to-last restart. Subsequently, a mishap involving William Sawalich forced drivers through the chicane maze, shuffling positions and adding chaos to the proceedings. Zilisch emerged back in second place but quickly closed the gap, only for another caution to create yet another tense scramble for position.
On the final restart, Zilisch himself locked up heading into the chicane, partially navigating the maze and reentering the track ahead of the mayhem behind him. Despite some commotion, NASCAR made no penalty call, allowing Zilisch to hold onto his advantage as the field scrambled in his wake.
Driver’s Perspective: Relief and Justification
Following the checkered flag, Zilisch opened up about the shifting mood in the closing laps.
“You know, a pretty crazy race,”
Zilisch said.
“I feel like we had a dominant car all day long and yeah, all of a sudden it, it turned into a bit of a mess with those late race restarts and just glad we were able to come out on top and get ourselves a win and what we deserved.”
—Zilisch, Driver
He further emphasized the importance of capitalizing on their strong performance:
“I feel like it would’ve definitely been unfortunate to not win that one.”
—Zilisch, Driver
Significance of Zilisch’s Victory
This commanding win on a road course not only showcases Zilisch’s control and racecraft but also underscores the unpredictable nature of NASCAR racing, where composure can be tested in the closing moments. Partnered with JR Motorsports and up against competitors like Austin Hill and William Sawalich, Zilisch overcame a race filled with late-race restarts, lock-ups, and the potential for chaos, solidifying his talent and determination in front of a tense Portland crowd.
