Kevin Harvick’s Heartfelt Tribute Honors Beloved SHR Ally

Kevin Harvick delivered a moving tribute to Rick ‘Otis’ Hodges, a longtime ally at Stewart-Haas Racing, after Hodges’ recent passing, highlighting the deep connections within the racing community. The Kevin Harvick heartfelt tribute, joined by crew chief Rodney Childers, honored the significant impact Hodges had on their careers and lives.

Remembering Rick ‘Otis’ Hodges’ Influence in Racing

Rick ‘Otis’ Hodges’ legacy in motorsports spans more than two decades, beginning in the concrete industry before joining Dale Earnhardt Inc., and then moving to Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), following a stint at Richard Childress Racing for Harvick. Known for his dedication, Otis played a pivotal role in Harvick’s 2014 championship team, making lasting impressions on teammates and the broader NASCAR community through years of service behind the scenes.

Following Otis’s passing, Rodney Childers, who now works at JR Motorsports as crew chief for drivers Connor Zilisch and Carson Kvapil, shared his grief and appreciation:

“Otis, you meant the world to me and everyone on the 4 team. We made lots of trips to victory lane and sprayed a lot of beer over the years. You were such a special part of that. My boys loved you so much. Thank you buddy! We are going to miss you every day. 💔🙏🏼”

Harvick’s own words reflected the depth of their personal and professional relationship:

“I am grateful for the years spent together, from my first to my final season with SHR. Otis, this toast is for to you. 🍻”

Childers and Harvick recently collaborated again in the CARS Tour, with Childers supporting late model efforts after his departure from Spire Motorsports. Hodges’ connection to Harvick’s team and influence on their successes remains a powerful memory for those who worked alongside him, especially in triumphs at victory lane and challenging times alike.

Youth Triumphs Continue the Harvick Legacy

The Harvick family’s impact in racing extends beyond the cup series, most notably through Kevin’s son, Keelan Harvick. At just 13 years old, Keelan set a new benchmark by becoming the youngest winner of the Snowflake 150, overtaking 15-year-old competitor Tristan McKee in a race that showcased his resolve and talent. Starting from 15th position, Keelan worked his way to the front, recovered from a setback during a restart, and led the final 25 laps to secure victory on December 9.

In response to the feat, Rodney Childers acknowledged Keelan’s accomplishment, while the young driver recognized the support he received from his family:

“It’s just really cool. [I’m thankful for] everything that everybody has sacrificed for me to get to this point. My dad took me to Italy when I was 10 to get the experience with all the other kids who are so much better. That helped me understand the value of racing and helped me get to this point,” Harvick said via NASCAR’s official website.

Keelan’s development continues as he recently achieved his first CARS Tour win at Hickory Motor Speedway. Throughout the season, he has faced off against his father in a series of races known as the Harvick Cup, establishing himself as a formidable presence and often surpassing Kevin Harvick in these family competitions.

The Enduring Spirit of Racing Families

The tributes from Kevin Harvick and Rodney Childers following Rick Hodges’ passing capture not only their respect for a valued team member but also the sense of family that defines the sport. As the next generation rises, exemplified by the young Keelan Harvick’s rapid ascent, these close bonds and heartfelt moments continue to inspire the broader NASCAR community and ensure that the legacy of figures like Otis remains alive within the sport.
