Connor Zilisch, coming off a standout rookie campaign in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, is officially set for his NASCAR Cup debut in 2026, overcoming a serious shoulder injury suffered in August at Watkins Glen International. Zilisch provided strong assurances about his recovery heading into the 2026 Rolex 24 at Daytona, underscoring that his focus is now entirely on the new racing season.
Recovery and Return After Victory Lane Mishap
In August 2025, Zilisch’s celebrations at Watkins Glen took a rough turn when he slipped off the top of his car in Victory Lane, landing awkwardly and breaking his collarbone. He was immediately transported to a hospital. Following surgery to address the injury, he demonstrated remarkable resilience by missing only a single race before returning to action. Now, at age nineteen, Zilisch is preparing to compete in the esteemed 2026 Rolex 24 at Daytona, marking another milestone in his career path.
During a practice session for the Daytona event, covered by Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, Zilisch shared an update on his condition:
“Connor Zilisch, at Daytona for Rolex 24 practice for next week’s race, said his shoulder feels fine and he hasn’t needed any offseason surgeries. The plate that was put in during the surgery following the Watkins Glen fall won’t be removed.”

He further explained the recovery process, noting the benefits of physical therapy.
“It probably took two months of PT (physical therapy), and I haven’t had any worries about it since. I didn’t get the plate out. I don’t plan on getting the plate out,”
Zilisch said.
“So, everything’s been really good. It certainly was a headache at first, but I’m glad everything’s fine now.”

Strong Performance After Surgery in O’Reilly Series
Despite the setback, Zilisch quickly returned to form, winning four more races even after his surgery. Although he began the Daytona race, Parker Kligerman ultimately took the checkered flag that day. Throughout the season, Zilisch notched a series-best 10 wins and reached the Championship 4. At Phoenix Raceway, however, he finished third, while Jesse Love claimed both the race victory and the season title.

A New Chapter: Cup Series Efforts and Expectations
The 2026 season presents a major transition for Zilisch. He will compete part-time for JR Motorsports in the O’Reilly Series, while stepping up for a full-time campaign with Trackhouse Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. Given his remarkable performance as a rookie and the resilience he displayed following his injury, Zilisch is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Rookie of the Year Award. His rise will likely draw increased attention from fans and analysts alike.
The NASCAR world will be keeping a close eye on how Zilisch navigates his Cup Series debut. With his injury behind him and his physical form restored, Zilisch is prepared to take the next step forward, solidifying his position as one of the sport’s brightest young talents. The anticipation for his full-time Cup effort underscores that his story—marked by both adversity and achievement—is one to follow closely through the coming season.
