William Byron’s Dramatic Daytona 500 Run Ends in 12th

William Byron’s Daytona 500 performance took an unexpected turn on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, where the Hendrick Motorsports driver rallied from multiple crashes but ultimately finished 12th. Despite early setbacks and significant damage to his Chevrolet, Byron found himself racing for the lead as the historic race neared its conclusion.

Byron Battles Setbacks at Daytona Beach

After climbing out of his battered car on pit road, Byron observed the scoring pylon with a mix of disbelief and disappointment. For the first time in three years, Byron and his iconic No. 24 car did not finish atop the Daytona 500 standings. Entering the race, he had a chance to become the first driver to win the season opener three consecutive times—a feat that has eluded legends such as Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Sterling Marlin, and Denny Hamlin.

While history slipped from his grasp, Byron still managed a sensational effort under adverse circumstances. Throughout the day, his car struggled to drive straight, yet he pushed forward and stayed within contention, capturing attention as he moved into the front pack during the closing laps. Tyler Reddick ultimately claimed victory, celebrating in Victory Lane—a familiar location for Byron from recent years—and joining a group of drivers who have dealt with both the highs and heartbreaks at Daytona International Speedway.

Series of Crashes Challenge Byron’s Resilience

Byron faced an uphill battle almost from the drop of the green flag. Within the opening 15 laps, he was caught in an incident triggered when B.J. McLeod spun ahead of him, sending Byron into the outside wall and inflicting suspension damage.

“The early crash, really, I thought was going to be the end of our competitive day,”

Byron said. The Hendrick Motorsports crew managed to repair his Chevrolet sufficiently for him to continue, and, as Byron put it,

“We just did a good job patching it up.”

The adversity did not end there. Byron, who had to start from the rear of the field in a backup car after a separate qualifying race crash on Thursday, later tangled with his teammate Alex Bowman and was part of another collision during the final lap. These incidents added to what had already been a challenging week for his team.

Late Surge Raises Hopes for Repeat Glory

Despite the barrage of setbacks, Byron remained a contender, even as the 500 neared its conclusion. With just three laps remaining, he found himself in position to take the lead, sparking hopes of a dramatic victory.

“I thought I was in the catbird seat,”

Byron remarked.

“I was like, ‘Man, everyone’s going to continue to block and move up off the bottom.’ I thought this could be perfect. It just didn’t materialize that way.”

Byron’s previous Daytona 500 wins were marked by thrilling comebacks—last year, after a late-race crash involving Denny Hamlin, he surged past eight competitors on the final lap to take the win. Two years ago, he captured the checkered flag after capitalizing on late-race wrecks, despite leading only 10 laps. This time, Byron managed to avoid much of the chaos that eliminated top contenders such as Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, and Michael McDowell, giving him a realistic shot at a third title until the final moments.

Reflecting on a Tumultuous Finish

After exiting his car, Byron encapsulated the dramatic day by saying,

“I just really couldn’t believe we had a shot there at the end. That was amazing.”

His emotion reflected the intense, often unpredictable nature of the Daytona 500. Looking back at the whirlwind of incidents and near-misses, Byron offered a simple assessment:

“Just kind of incredible that we were even in the race.”

Although he fell short of joining the select ranks of drivers with three consecutive Daytona 500 victories, Byron’s perseverance and electrifying performance will be remembered as a display of determination in the face of relentless challenges. His journey at Daytona International Speedway this year illustrates the enduring allure and drama of NASCAR’s most celebrated event, marking another chapter in the storied history of the race.
