Jesse Love Dominates but Falls Short in Phoenix Race Finish

Jesse Love put on an impressive display at Phoenix Raceway this weekend, dominating much of the Govx 200 but ultimately missing out on the win in a dramatic finish. Love’s Phoenix race performance showcased his strength as he led the most laps, but Justin Allgaier took the victory in the final moments, leaving Love to settle for second place.

Front-Runners Clash at Phoenix Raceway

At Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, Jesse Love and Carson Kvapil set the pace by leading the most laps in Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series event. Throughout the Govx 200, these two drivers swapped the lead, racing for the top spot in their No. 2 and No. 1 cars, respectively. Despite their efforts, the ultimate win went to seasoned competitor Justin Allgaier, who managed to overtake both in the race’s critical final laps.

The contest saw Love lead a race-high 114 laps, while Kvapil commanded the field for 22 laps. However, Allgaier’s late surge proved decisive as he led the final 11 laps to secure his 29th series victory and his first at Phoenix since 2019. This result meant that Love finished as runner-up, with Kvapil taking third place after a day spent battling fiercely at the front.

Love’s Battle for Victory

Entering the weekend, Jesse Love had high expectations, arriving as the most recent Phoenix winner in the series. He had previously sealed championship victories at the Arizona oval, including two ARCA Menards Series West titles in 2020 and 2021 and last year’s O’Reilly Series championship. The momentum appeared to be in his favor as he captured the second stage win, confirming his status as a favorite.

However, the race’s late segments were disrupted by a pair of caution flags following the final pit-stop cycle. Love reflected on his decision-making and the wear on his tires during these chaotic moments:

“The last restart, I thought it went exactly how I thought it was going to go,”

“I chose the bottom (lane) because I thought they would wash up and open the door, and it did, and it was probably the best two restarts in my life. And then, yeah, just the 7 (Allgaier) just had my number there the last few laps, and I should have figured out a way to make it harder on him, and he timed it out right. Yeah, just a little bit blown away.”

Love faced tough competition not only from Kvapil but also from Haas Factory Team drivers Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer. Their intense fight for track position allowed Allgaier to make his decisive move for the win.

Kvapil Gains Ground with Strategic Support

Carson Kvapil nearly scored his first O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victory and benefited from the legendary expertise of his crew chief Rodney Childers. Childers, who guided Kevin Harvick to five Phoenix wins, joined JR Motorsports‘ No. 1 team this season. Kvapil credited Childers with boosting his confidence, especially after reviewing on-board footage from Harvick’s dominant performances in previous years.

“He doesn’t talk a whole lot, but we prepare quite a bit for all the races,”

Carson Kvapil, driver

“Obviously, I’m kind of at a point where every race really matters, and going and running good in one of these races and winning one is huge for me. So we’re just really trying to prepare as much as we can, maximize our sim time and just do all the right things, and I kind of feel like this is a preview for what we’re going to have with the 1 car this year – at least I hope so.”

Kvapil moved up to fourth place in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series standings, a solid gain during his partial season. His 2026 campaign is split among three teams—he’s driving JR Motorsports’ No. 1 car for 24 races, the No. 9 for five, and DGM Racing for select events such as his recent entry at Circuit of The Americas. Next week, Kvapil will be back in the No. 9 Chevrolet for Las Vegas, continuing his dynamic season.

Allgaier Takes the Lead, Love Remains Consistent

The Phoenix result shifted the championship standings. Justin Allgaier’s win elevated him to the points lead, while Love maintained his second-place rank. Notably, Love stands out as the only driver in the series with a top-ten finish in every race so far this season, reinforcing his reputation for consistency at the highest level even in the absence of a win.

Love voiced his pride in the team’s preparation and response to past success:

“Well, I’m really proud of our group. I’m proud of Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and the whole team,”

Jesse Love, driver

“I’m proud of everybody back in Welcome, (North Carolina, RCR headquarters) for having a really productive offseason. It’s really easy to win a championship and get complacent, and I think that we knew that going into the offseason, and we refused to let that happen. So yeah, we’ve got the best cars right now, and I just … I have got to do a better job and close it out.”

Looking Ahead on the NASCAR Schedule

The competitive field at Phoenix Raceway demonstrates that the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series remains unpredictable, with veterans like Justin Allgaier and rising stars such as Jesse Love and Carson Kvapil contending for wins. As the season continues, attention shifts to Las Vegas, where Kvapil and Love will once again be among those to watch. Their Phoenix race performance provided clear evidence of their championship potential, setting the stage for more intense racing in the weeks ahead.
