HISTORY 

Darlington Raceway boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with the origins of NASCAR and the vision of Harold Brasington. Inspired by the glory of the Indianapolis 500 and fueled by his passion for racing, Brasington embarked on a mission to bring top-tier motorsports to his home state of South Carolina. 

After retiring from racing himself, Brasington’s determination led him to break ground for his dream project in 1949. His vision materialized in September 1950 when Darlington Raceway opened its gates to the public. The track’s unique, egg-shaped layout and narrow racing surface immediately posed a challenge to drivers, earning it the nickname “The Track Too Tough to Tame.”

From its inaugural year onward, Darlington Raceway became a cornerstone of NASCAR competition. It hosted iconic events like the Southern 500, a race steeped in tradition and prestige. The track’s unforgiving nature, characterized by its infamous “Darlington Stripe,” where drivers would brush the wall, added an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to every race.

TRACK INFORMATION

The Darlington Raceway, affectionately dubbed “The Lady in Black,” stands as a testament to the rich history and evolution of NASCAR racing. With its surface paved in asphalt, this iconic track stretches 1.366 miles (2.198 km) and features four distinct turns. The banking varies throughout the track, with turns 1 and 2 boasting a steep 25° incline, while turns 3 and 4 offer a slightly gentler 23° banking. The front straightaway has a subtle 3° incline, contrasting with the back straight’s 2° slope.

Over the years, Darlington Raceway has undergone significant changes and enhancements. Notably, in 1997, the track layout was reversed, transforming what was once the front stretch into the back stretch, and vice versa. This alteration brought a fresh dynamic to the racing experience, challenging drivers in new ways.

In a bid to expand its offerings and embrace night racing, Darlington Raceway underwent another transformation between late 2003 and early 2004. This marked the installation of lights around the track, allowing for thrilling nighttime competitions under the floodlights. This change not only enhanced the spectator experience but also provided drivers with cooler temperatures, optimizing performance on the track.

Darlington Raceway’s legacy is further accentuated by its moniker, “The Lady in Black,” a title steeped in tradition and folklore. The nickname originated from the track maintenance crew’s practice of coating the entire surface with fresh asphalt sealant the night before races. This ritual gave the track a distinct dark appearance, earning it the enduring nickname that continues to resonate with fans and drivers alike.
