Rick Ware Racing (RWR) is a professional auto racing organization based in the United States, competing across multiple motorsport disciplines. Established by Rick Ware, the team has carved out a significant presence primarily in the NASCAR Cup Series but also participates in the Xfinity Series. RWR operates with a philosophy of competitive racing accessible on various budgets, which has allowed them to maintain a stable position in the fiercely competitive world of NASCAR.
HISTORY
Founded by Rick Ware, the team began its journey in the motorsports arena competing initially in motorcycle racing and later transitioning into auto racing. The evolution of RWR is marked by its versatility and expansion across a wide range of racing series, showcasing a unique ability to adapt and compete in various forms of motorsports.
In the early days, Rick Ware Racing made its mark in the motorcycle racing world, achieving success and garnering attention. The move to auto racing saw the team participate in several racing disciplines, including sports car racing and eventually making a significant transition into stock car racing.
By the mid-2000s, RWR shifted its primary focus towards NASCAR, entering races in the Craftsman Truck Series (now the Camping World Truck Series). Over time, the team expanded its NASCAR involvement, participating not only in the Truck Series but also in the Xfinity Series and ultimately the Cup Series, NASCAR’s highest level.
Rick Ware Racing’s approach to NASCAR has been characterized by running multiple entries often fielded in collaboration with other teams or through alliances. This strategy has allowed RWR to maintain a presence in the highly competitive NASCAR Cup Series environment, despite the substantial resources required. The team is known for giving opportunities to emerging drivers, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents at the top levels of stock car racing.
Today, Rick Ware Racing continues to evolve and adapt to the changing landscapes of global motorsports. With a history of resilience and adaptability, RWR remains committed to competing passionately across multiple platforms, striving for growth and success in each new racing challenge it undertakes.
NASCAR CUP SERIES
The team entered the NASCAR Cup Series in 2004 and has been actively involved ever since. Based in the United States, RWR has grown from modest beginnings to become a fixture on the NASCAR circuit.
In the Cup Series, RWR initially made sporadic attempts with various drivers and has expanded over the years to field multiple entries. Notably, the team has fielded cars for a variety of drivers, leveraging technical alliances to enhance their competitiveness. By 2017, RWR committed to a full-time schedule, consistently fielding the No. 51 Chevrolet and expanding to include additional cars in subsequent seasons. Despite challenges, including competitive hurdles and NASCAR penalties, RWR remains a determined presence in the Cup Series, continuously working to improve performance and expand its operations.
NASCAR XFINITY SERIES
Rick Ware Racing (RWR) made its debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (now Xfinity Series) in 2004, fielding a mix of Dodge and Chevrolet vehicles. After a focus shift to other motorsports like Motocross and Supercross from 2004 to 2008, RWR returned to the Nationwide Series in 2009. In May 2020, RWR formed a strategic partnership with SS-Green Light Racing, led by Ware’s close friend Bobby Dotter.
NASCAR TRUCK SERIES
Rick Ware Racing (RWR) entered the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 1999, fielding trucks numbered 51 and 81 with drivers Randy MacDonald and owner-driver Rick Ware respectively. In 2000, the team planned to compete throughout the season with both trucks, but Rick Ware’s racing career was cut short by a severe crash at California Speedway that caused a career-ending neck injury.
