Ford Next Gen Mustang: Bold Design Changes for 2024 Season

Ford Next Gen Mustang: The NASCAR Next Gen car made its debut in 2022, bringing about significant changes to the Cup car variants of Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Toyota Camry. The goal was to make the cars more closely resemble their production counterparts, and this design overhaul was long overdue. Ford, in particular, took an aggressive approach with the Mustang’s design, introducing the new Dark Horse bodywork for the 2024 season.

Before the Next Gen car’s debut, each manufacturer underwent wind tunnel testing and on-track testing to ensure aerodynamic parity. While there weren’t major differences, each car had strengths and weaknesses on specific track types. NASCAR allowed for some minor bodywork changes heading into the 2023 season.

The Camaro received a significant front-end redesign for 2023, but the Mustang and Camry had smaller updates to the bumpers, fenders, and hood. These changes were subtle and might not have been noticeable to the average fan. The front end of the car was more open for manufacturers to design while staying within the aerodynamic efficiency window set by NASCAR.

In 2024, Ford took a bold step with the Mustang’s design, especially in the fenders. The front bumper was pushed down and flattened at the top, while the middle of the bumper protruded out. This design philosophy appears to focus on increasing front sideforce, which helps the car turn better, particularly on large ovals.

Moreover, the raised front fenders suggest Ford’s intention to create more front sideforce, aiding the car’s performance. The design could also enhance side drafting, a common practice on ovals where a trailing car positions its front fender close to the leading car’s rear fender, disturbing the airflow and creating more drag, which allows for a pass.

Ford aims to optimize the Mustang’s performance on a variety of tracks, particularly on intermediate ovals, where it previously had some disadvantages. Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, highlighted the importance of repositioning within the set parameters to maximize performance. While taking a radical approach to aerodynamics can be beneficial, it also comes with inherent risks. Only time will tell if Ford’s pronounced fenders provide the desired competitive advantage.
