Ford Performance Decision: In a departure from its NASCAR programme, Ford Performance has decided not to introduce the Dark Horse Mustang to Supercars in Australia. Unlike Supercars, which adapted the S550 body shape for its Gen3 Supercar and later rushed the S650 version for this season, Ford’s NASCAR teams have transitioned to the S650 model. Despite the appeal of showcasing the performance-oriented Dark Horse version in a major racing series, Ford has committed to the current Mustang GT shape used in Supercars.
Sources indicate that Ford will initiate an off-season wind tunnel programme with the current aero package introduced on the Gold Coast. During the testing, a range of potential changes, including those that have been CFD tested or track tested, will be assessed. This approach is also expected for the Chevrolet Camaro as Supercars aims to achieve aero parity.
Scheduled for December, the wind tunnel test will utilize a Mustang built by Dick Johnson Racing and a Camaro constructed by Triple Eight. While the Dark Horse may not be featured in Supercars immediately, there is a possibility it could be introduced in Australia later on.
The GT3 version of the Mustang, set to debut next year, draws heavily from the Dark Horse R. Additionally, the Dark Horse R will be utilized for a one-make series known as the Mustang Challenge. Initially, the race-spec Dark Horse Rs will be targeted for the US market before potentially expanding to other global markets.
Ultimately, Ford Australia will base any decision to introduce the Dark Horse in Australia on market demand and interest.
