NASCAR 2025 Transformations: TV Rights and Team Finances

NASCAR 2025 Transformations: In NASCAR, sponsorship agreements stand as the primary revenue source for teams—a unique model rarely observed in major sporting leagues, except within the realm of auto racing.

The approaching year, 2025, heralds significant transformations for NASCAR. Anticipated are shifts in both the television rights agreement and the charter agreement involving teams.

Already set in motion is half of this transformation. NASCAR recently disclosed a novel television deal, distributing NASCAR Cup Series events across four networks.

This freshly forged TV partnership is speculated to yield a considerable uptick in value compared to its predecessor. Notably, a segment of this enhanced revenue stream is earmarked for allocation to the competing teams.

The current charter agreement designates 25% of TV revenue for team disbursement. Yet, under the forthcoming 2025 charter agreement, a larger slice of the financial pie is expected to be apportioned to the teams, a subject under ongoing negotiation between the teams and NASCAR.

Steve Phelps expressed concern regarding the financial strains faced by Cup-level race teams, stating, “Our race teams by and large are losing money at the Cup level, and that is something we need to solve for them.”

He further outlined two critical approaches to remedy this situation: “One is to ensure they receive additional revenue. They are keen on securing increased funds from both the sanctioning body and the tracks via the purse, a step we need to take.”

Phelps emphasized, “The only way we can do that is to have increases in your media rights, which is what we are doing today.”
