Alex Bowman Talks Nerves, Momentum at NASCAR Playoff Media Day

Alex Bowman, the Hendrick Motorsports driver piloting the No. 48 Chevrolet, addressed the assembled media before the launch of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, discussing both the tension and optimism that define his team‘s outlook. During a detailed media session at NASCAR Playoff Media Day, Bowman described how he and his crew have prepared for the unknowns ahead and reflected on their journey to reach this point, emphasizing that the

marked a critical checkpoint in his racing season.

The anticipation surrounding the playoff spot had been building for weeks, culminating with a nerve-wracking finale to the regular season. Bowman, alongside key teammates at Hendrick Motorsports, now looks forward to competing against a field that includes organizations such as Toyota and Chevrolet rivals, as well as formidable drivers like Tyler Reddick and Ross Chastain, aiming to advance deep into the postseason.

Handling the Stress of the Playoff Cut-Off

Alex Bowman explained the intense atmosphere during the final race of the regular season, as he waited to see if he and his team would earn their place in the playoffs. The uncertainty of watching the positions change, with critical moves involving drivers and cars like the No. 12 and Bowman’s own teammates, set the stage for a highly emotional experience. While anxiety was high, Bowman described his approach to circumstances largely outside his control by focusing on perspective and preparation.

“Nerve-wracking for sure, but at the same time everything that we’ve been able to do this summer and as strong as we’ve been able to run… obviously you want to be in the playoffs, but when it’s that much out of your control and there’s nothing you can do, you also can’t let it absolutely ruin your year if something outside of your control happens. So that was kind of the mindset going down and kind of the mindset that we carried through that.”

Bowman candidly stated that the feeling after clinching the playoff berth was neither complete relief nor new stress. Rather, he maintained the same mindset he had going into the race, aware that the challenge only intensifies from here, with every week demanding peak performance.

Determined to Compete—Not to Prove a Point

When asked if he felt he had something to prove in these playoffs, Bowman balanced his competitive drive with a professional focus. While a championship title remains a clear goal, Bowman explained that his motivation stems from representing Hendrick Motorsports to the best of his ability each week, rather than external validation.

“Yes and no. Obviously it would be amazing to go win a championship. And I feel like we’ve got a race team that can definitely contend right now. We’re going to do all we can to make it happen. But I don’t drive race cars to prove anything to anybody anymore. I’m here to do my job for Hendrick Motorsports and to go perform at a high level every week.”

That balanced approach, focusing on the team’s potential rather than outside pressures, sets a clear focus for the upcoming rounds, regardless of the growing intensity as the stakes rise.

Sticking to Consistent Preparation

Bowman emphasized the consistency of his team’s work ethic over recent months as they faced the possibility of not making the playoffs. According to Bowman, there was no dramatic shift in preparation as the cut-off approached, since maintaining high standards has been central to their approach since the start of the season.

“I don’t think anything changes. You’re preparing at a high level for the last eight months and continuing to prepare at a high level for this week the same as we did last week and the week before. So while it’s certainly not like a ramp up, because we’re already there, we’re just kind of going to work… business as usual.”

This steady focus, cultivated even during uncertain weeks, may serve as an advantage over teams that only intensify efforts at the last minute, especially as the playoffs bring together some of NASCAR’s most competitive organizations, like those run by Toyota GAZOO Racing and other Chevrolet entries.

Navigating Darlington and Challenging Tracks Ahead

The playoff opener at Darlington Raceway, recognized as a tough and unpredictable venue, represents an immediate test for Bowman. Reflecting on past struggles there—including an incident when running in the top ten last spring—Bowman aims to avoid critical mistakes that can end a playoff run early. He noted the unique demands that tracks like Homestead and Richmond have presented, emphasizing adaptability as well as learning from prior difficulties with the Next-Gen car.

“Yeah, it’d be nice to win, but it hasn’t been the best place for me. We’ve been pretty hit and miss there. I think we were running eighth or ninth last spring, and I hit the fence and broke a toe link, so got to avoid that, right? That’s the biggest thing about Darlington for me is just avoiding mistakes and racing the racetrack and kind of letting the rest happen. If we can just put together solid weeks through this first round, we should be okay.”

As Darlington kicks off the first round, Bowman recognizes the importance of staying disciplined on tracks notorious for their high risk and mental strain, especially as adrenaline spikes for the field’s top drivers.

Building on Strengths and Addressing Weaknesses

Assessing his playoff prospects, Bowman credited his team’s momentum and improved speed on previously difficult tracks as major positives. His own growth at challenging venues, such as Homestead and Richmond, gives him confidence that his crew can perform where they have struggled before. Still, Bowman acknowledged that having fewer playoff points than other contenders stands as a notable hurdle, but noted the open nature of the competition this year.

“The biggest strength is the momentum that we have behind us… the year that we’ve been able to put together, the speed that we’ve had at some racetracks that I’ve been pretty bad at before. At Homestead, we’ve never been good and we almost won. Richmond, we’ve been pretty bad with the Next-Gen car and we were strong there. So I think that shows me that we can go to places that we haven’t been good at before and be really strong. The lack of playoff points is probably our biggest weakness, but the field’s pretty wide open.”

This self-assessment demonstrates Bowman’s awareness of both the positive momentum his team brings into the playoffs and the areas where they must remain vigilant if they hope to advance through each elimination round.

Overcoming Adversity and Looking Back at the Season

Reflecting on the journey to the playoffs, Bowman recalled significant challenges, including consecutive on-track incidents earlier in the season that threatened their points standing, as well as the team’s resilience after a disqualification at Charlotte. The ability to rebound and perform strongly at the next event in Las Vegas stands as proof to Bowman that his team can handle setbacks and stay competitive entering postseason competition.

“I feel like that has been our baseline throughout the year. That’s where we started the year. We were pretty good on points, then we crashed for like two months straight and then kind of got back to it. I felt like our team had a lot of growth going into the playoffs last year and got a lot better. Just knowing that we can do it. Obviously the DQ (in 2024 at Charlotte) was unfortunate, but we were able to execute at a high level the next week when we went to Vegas and contended for the win there. So it didn’t shut us down by any means and we have to continue to work hard.”

Momentum Leading into This Year’s Playoff Campaign

This season marks the first time that Bowman enters the playoffs feeling a genuine sense of momentum. Despite the lingering issue of limited playoff points compared to other teams, he views the recent performance upswing as a vital asset for making a strong push in the postseason. Facing a diverse and competitive field, Bowman expects the battle to continue through grueling rounds, including those at iconic venues such as Darlington and Vegas.

“We have momentum going into the playoffs, which we’ve never really had before. So I do think we’re in a better position. The lack of playoff points is tough, but we’ll continue working hard at it.”

Execution and Consistency: The Key Playoff Strategy

Asked about the most important factor as the first round begins, Bowman unequivocally named consistency and faultless execution. The upcoming races challenge drivers with tracks where unpredictability and chaos can upend even a frontrunner’s run. For Bowman and his team, methodically delivering solid results and limiting mistakes emerges as the formula to reach the Round of Eight, before a shift in focus toward race victories may be required to keep championship hopes alive.

“Consistency, just continuing to execute through these first three races, right? It’s three tough racetracks where a lot can happen. And, really, I think you can ‘consistency’ your way to the Round of Eight pretty solidly. Past that, you’ve got to win races. But, yeah, I think continuing to do what we’ve been doing.”

Significance and What’s at Stake for Bowman and Hendrick Motorsports

As the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs get underway, Alex Bowman and his Hendrick Motorsports team confront both the emotional highs and lows that define championship contention. With lessons learned from past setbacks and a renewed sense of momentum, Bowman heads into the first rounds at Darlington and beyond prepared to battle seasoned opponents from organizations like Toyota GAZOO Racing and Chevrolet, while racing alongside talented teammates. The importance of keeping mistakes at bay, building on season-long growth with the Next-Gen car, and focusing on consistency may prove decisive in what is shaping up to be an exceptionally open playoff field. For Bowman, this campaign represents not only an opportunity to chase a coveted title but also a chance to validate months of determined work and fortitude under pressure.
