JR Motorsports Eyes Talladega Glory in NXS Playoff Push

With the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs heating up, JR Motorsports heads into the pivotal Talladega Superspeedway race this weekend, aiming to enhance its championship hopes. The JR Motorsports Talladega NXS Preview focuses on each driver’s momentum, standing, and strategy as the team seeks to secure a place in the Championship 4 with only two races left in the Round of 8.

Carson Kvapil Seeks Turnaround to Stay in Title Hunt

Carson Kvapil, driving the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops / Clarience Technologies Chevrolet, faces a critical moment as the NXS Playoffs progress. With 30 starts this season, Kvapil holds six top-five and thirteen top-ten finishes, amassing 64 laps led and an average finish of 14th, positioning him seventh in the standings, 22 points behind the Championship 4 cutoff.

The rookie’s experience on extended speedways includes one top-five and four top-tens out of eight starts on tracks longer than two miles, with his best being a fourth-place finish at the Daytona International Speedway season opener. According to NASCAR Loop Data Statistics, his skill as a competitor is highlighted by his ranking, with the fifth-highest quality passes this season.

Preparing for his third Talladega NXS start, Kvapil recognizes both the challenge and opportunity the unpredictable superspeedway presents. As he put it,

“We didn’t have the result we hoped for last weekend, so we have some work to do these next couple weeks to keep this No. 1 team in the fight. Talladega can be an unpredictable place, so we are going to do our best to stay out of the mess and be up front when it counts. I know this team will keep bringing fast race cars to the track and we plan to finish out the season strong. We have two more chances to get into the Championship 4 for Johnny Morris and everyone else at Bass Pro Shops and Clarience Technologies.”

Justin Allgaier Aims to Build on Historic Milestone

Justin Allgaier, piloting the No. 7 BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet, enters Talladega ranked second in playoff points, sitting 44 points above the cutline after a strong run at Las Vegas. The veteran driver boasts three wins, thirteen top-fives, and eighteen top-tens in 30 starts this season, along with an impressive 925 laps led and an average finish of 12.4.

Allgaier recently made history as the first NXS driver to cross 300 top-ten finishes, joining only three others in series history to lead over 7,000 career laps. His Talladega record includes five top-fives and eight top-tens over 19 starts, highlighted by a runner-up result in spring 2016. His prowess on superspeedways is further underscored with a 2023 Daytona victory.

Looking to leverage team strength and experience, Allgaier shared,

“Talladega is such a unique race. Anything can happen there and you have to be on your toes from start to finish. JRM has always been extremely strong on these superspeedways and I know we are going to have a great BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet once again on Saturday. We just need to go out and be smart, work well with our teammates and be there at the end. If we can do that I know we will be in a great position to race for the win and make our way into the Championship 4.”

Sammy Smith Looks to Defend Talladega Victory

Sammy Smith approaches Talladega with the advantage of recent success, having won this event last season in dramatic fashion. Driving the No. 8 Pilot Chevrolet, Smith is fighting from eighth in the playoff standings, armed with one win, seven top-fives, and fifteen top-ten finishes through 30 races, and an average finish of 14.9.

Smith has twenty-one starts on tracks two miles or longer, yielding three top-fives and seven top-tens, in addition to his Talladega triumph, which was sealed by a late pass on the final lap. This time, the Pilot Chevrolet will also be supported by Dedicated Transportation Solutions (DTS), bringing additional local business ties to Greenville, SC and transportation expertise to the team.

Reflecting on both the unpredictability and teamwork required, Smith commented,

“Talladega is already a wild card and having it in the Playoffs adds another level of unknown with eight of us trying to make the most of this race to advance. This No. 8 team won there last year so I have all the confidence that we can do it again, we just have to be smart and strategic with our moves on the track and pit road. It’s a full JRM effort at these superspeedways so we’ll lean on our teammates and try to keep our nose clean to be in contention at the end.”

Connor Zilisch Heads to Talladega as Points Leader

Connor Zilisch, piloting the No. 88 First Bank of Alabama Chevrolet, brings substantial momentum into the Talladega event as the current points leader, 82 points above the playoff cutline. In 29 starts this season, Zilisch has notched an extraordinary ten victories, nineteen top-fives, and twenty-one top-tens, with 985 laps led and an average finish of 7.7.

Talladega marks only his second NXS start at the famed superspeedway. During the spring meeting, Zilisch was leading on the final lap before an accident stopped his quest for victory. His 2023 record at drafting tracks—including Daytona and Atlanta—is impressive, with a victory alongside Parker Kligerman at Daytona and a fourth-place showing in Atlanta, further illustrating his growing expertise on high-speed circuits.

Extending his record streak of consecutive top-five finishes with a Las Vegas result, Zilisch has achieved eighteen straight races inside the top five since May at Charlotte Motor Speedway—a testament to both skill and consistency, supported by his average finish of just over second during this period. With strong local support from First Bank of Alabama, Zilisch aims for both personal and team redemption at Talladega.

Sharing his strategy, Zilisch stated,

“I’m thankful that we are 82 points above the cutline, giving us a bit of a cushion heading into Talladega. We all know there are times on superspeedways when a situation is out of your control no matter how good a spot you think you’re in at the time so our position in the standings helps. This No. 88 team is looking for redemption from our race here in the spring and it would be great to get to Victory Lane with our hometown partner, First Bank of Alabama.”

What’s at Stake for JR Motorsports Drivers
